Jack attack and first impressions of Megabass X Pod.

With an extremely stormy forecast we ruled out a saltwater adventure and decided to head for a spot of piking …. The venue throws up some decent fish despite its size. We set off and headed south for Co. Monaghan.

I started off using my new Megabass X Pod – a multi functional lure designed by Megabass which has an adjustable bib / lip allowing you to change the style from walk the dog, to a popper to a wake bait etc …. all sounds a bit gimicky but believe me it looks deadly!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAExcuse the dodgy video … it was windy and didn’t quite turn out how I intended ….

It wasn’t long before a small jack made a leap out of the shallows after the lure but sadly missed it.

As usual it was weedless style soft plastics which accounted for the majority of the fish. We failed to get any decent sized pike but you can’t complain with consistent sport on well balanced tackle.

We caught fish on the following soft plastics:

  • Fiiish Black Minnow 160with 15g Shallow Head
  • Fiiish Black Minnow 120, 12g Shore
  • Reins Rock Vibe 5 inch, 3g Belly Weighted 4/0
  • Fish Arrow Flash J 5inch, weight less and 4g belly weight
  • Daiwa Duck Fin Shads, Jika rigged

I also had a play around with the awesome looking Illex 250 Dexter Shad! It is a true beast of a soft plastic. I was using it rigged up on the Illex S 250 XH – not my usual style of rod but I can see the application when you need to chuck bigger lure.

We ended up well into double figures of jack pike – we had hoped as the sun dropped we would connect with a few larger fish but sadly it did’t happen.

Was great to get away for a bit though and it didn’t rain which is always a bonus!
